A shout-out [Jun. 15th, 2007|09:39 am]
So its been a while and I WILL be blogging in more detail soon (ish). But this post is dedicated to the second coming of the Man, Jim Tucek who is back blogging! I guess this means I have to abandon my 101-reasons-for-not-consistently-blogging book.

A post [Apr. 29th, 2007|09:18 pm]
Right, I have a blog. The past month has been slightly exciting (more than the usual fun-trip). I went back to St Louis for Michael's wedding where I had absurd amounts of fun. This was followed by my sister visiting me in San Francisco for the weekend. I played tour guide and led her to famous San Francisco haunts such IKEA, Target and Best Buy. It was thrilling in a lets-buy-every-piece-of-household-accessory sort of way. We did manage to shove in some truly touristy things like viewing the Golden Gate Bridge from vista point and going down to the most famous taqueria place in San Francisco.  This weekend  was slightly more mellow with only two strange things happening. I was fortunate enough to witness 20 - 25 rollerskaters wearing  flashing lights inundating the street to the tune of Gnarls Barkley's Crazy at 10 at night. The other was listening to the drunken rants of some guy straggling through the street in the middle of the night. He ranted angrily about some Puerto Rican woman who must have dumped him (or so I assume). However, I appreciate the fact that even while he was stone drunk he was sensitive enough to distinguish the racial characteristic of this woman instead of calling her a plain foreigner.  As the days pass, Californians (both sober and drunk) are becoming cooler in my eyes.

"Celebrity" sighting of the week (quite possibly the year) [Mar. 31st, 2007|08:06 pm]
Since the circles I move are small, unglamorous and right now barely qualify as circles, the fact that I brushed shoulders with a celebrity is astounding. I stood next to the mayor of San Francisco in a bookstore and didn't even know it until it was pointed out to me much (much later). I wonder if they sell t-shirts with that on?

Peace and love with a salad on the side [Mar. 25th, 2007|10:26 pm]
I think this city is getting to me. I'm eating more salads than I have ever eaten in my whole life and I'm thinking of taking yoga classes. In other news, one my of life-long dreams came true yesterday. I was dissed (frankly, muttered at) in Chinese. It happened at an incredibly narrow aisle of a tiny hardware store. I was approaching this elderly Chinese lady who was staring at a bunch of tea cups (or it could have been the graters). I was contemplating whether to try going past her or simply turn around when she looked at me and muttered/grumbled in Chinese. I turned around. She won this time, but we'll see who wins the next round..

The fog [Mar. 24th, 2007|11:33 am]

San Francisco does not lack fog. Here's a view from my apartment which on a sunny day is really nice.

Sorry for the interruption [Mar. 24th, 2007|11:05 am]
I hate to interrupt this silence with an actual post but I just want to say that I Have Moved! I feel like I've finally officially arrived in San Francisco. I *love* my new apartment though I'm still getting used to the neighborhood. There are only THAT many mommies with strollers I can bear to see during any given day along with drunken revelers (there's something very wrong with that picture, isn't there?). I had a bit of a sampling of the SF evening/night-life and like what I've seen so far. I may not have mentioned this in my previous posts but the food here is phenomenal. I'm not a big food connousieur but its pretty damn good in these parts! I also paid a visit to the supposedly best record-store in San Francisco after which 4 brand-new deliciously exciting CDs found their way into my bag. So, yes I think I'm staying.

A fashion statement [Mar. 13th, 2007|10:22 pm]
I don't live in St Louis anymore. But this makes me want to...so badly. I saw a guy wearing this t-shirt in Lambert airport and it even made the usually stoic and aggressive-looking TSA guys break into a grin.

Character-building [Mar. 11th, 2007|09:28 pm]
[Current Music |Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - Satan Said Dance]

Today was fun. I lugged a trash can along with a floor lamp 8 blocks. A guy on his bicycle nearly stopped and stared. A kindly old woman tending to her garden commented on the steep hill I was climbing and how it was good exercise. If things like this build character I have enough to last a year at the very least. Yesterday I realized that my apartment is close-ish to Golden Gate Bridge which allowed me to look at it for the first time. Its incredibly beautiful especially with the fog in the surrounding mountains. Apparently, during winter they close the bridge off early to pedestrians due to the number of attempted suicides.  Damn kids.

A shout out [Mar. 9th, 2007|11:13 pm]
I forgot to mention that last weekend I had a short yet very fun encounter with [info]lifeessence and [info]baudot. It included some karoke and purikura photo booths (thank god for wikipedia). All this while being entirely sober. How often have you sung to Journey without being under the influence of alcohol?

The Interweb [Mar. 9th, 2007|10:59 pm]
[Current Music |The Cure - Catch]

People who leave their wireless connections unsecured are decent and generous human beings. I have been using unsecured (albeit incredibly dodgy) wireless for the past month and it has served me well. It'll take a while to readjust to using a legitimate internet connection but I am definite looking forward to it. In other news, I'm getting ready to move into my brand-new apartment next weekend and (in even more exciting news) I'm super-excited to fly back to St Louis for Michael's wedding next month! Yayyy for people growing up and getting married!! My job's chugging along, I'm currently working on a simple feature that may getting included in the next release of the software so that's slightly inspiring. I feel like I'm getting used to the city now because I have my "city face" on when I go to work. It includes glares at people walking slowly on the street along with a look of utter boredom while traveling on the train. The transformation has Begun.

And now for a divine intermission [Mar. 4th, 2007|09:46 am]

I currently live in a neighborhood called the Sunset district. I can actually see a bit of the ocean from my room and occasionally the view makes up for the slightly annoying commute to work (the casinos across the Mississippi never looked THIS pretty!).

I am the eggman, I am the yuppy [Mar. 2nd, 2007|10:00 pm]
[Current Music |Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - Gospel Song]

Hola to the 2 readers of this blog! This week has been craZy! I had an apartment, lost it only to find another one all in a span of 2 days. The final story is that I might (finally!) get to sign a lease on Monday. I never thought I would be THIS happy to throw away wads of cash at a completely strange company and/or person.  The final winner is a studio in the "yuppy" part of town called the Marina. Hopefully, contingent on nothing sneaky or perverse happening over the weekend I will have a home on Monday! Free drinks to all! In my quest to find the Perfect apartment I've probably called 30 people this week alone only to leave the same voice message on their answering machine. This has led to me believe that what I really need is my phone to call a list of pre-selected numbers and spit out an automated message on their answering machine. Like a tele-marketer-type person. World peace, climate control and  self-marketing phones.  Thats going on my amazon wishlist.

Trade you a soul for an apartment! [Feb. 23rd, 2007|11:24 pm]
[Tags|]

I completely hate looking for apartments. Its stressful, hard and incredibly boring after a while. The San Francisco rental market is a leaser's dream come true. People virtually show up to open house showings with bags and check-books in hand ready-to-move. I also detest being a tourist, standing around with a map staring at road signs simultaneously trying to look nonchalant so that criminals don't pick on you for being a tourist. Knowledge about a city should be loaded into your brain, the second you land in the airport (I'm still trying to work out the details). In happier news, my first week at work was really good. I'm really excited about what the company does (I have no idea about the company's blogging policy, so I'm going to play-it-safe and not say too much about the company itself) and the people. Finally, my weekend is going to be filled with face-sessions with 1500$ studios punctuated by $1700 1-bedroom apartments.

Welcome to San Francisco [Feb. 21st, 2007|10:44 pm]
[Tags|]
[Current Music |David Bowie - Heroes]

My flight to San Francisco started off pretty uneventfully other than having to unpack/repack suitcases in the middle of the check-in counters since the total weight of all my worldly belongings exceeded airline regulations. My 4 hour journey to LA was a snooze-fest after which I boarded my flight to San Francisco. I loudly exclaimed "Dear God" to dump my ridiculously heavy backpack next to an elderly couple who occupied the seats next to mine. I have a feeling that comment was what started it off. The couple were returning from an exotic cruise and had over their lifetime visited around a billion (approximately) countries around the world. However, during the course of the flight I realized that although they were good-natured individuals, the world seemed very mono-chromatic in their eyes.  I was warned several times about the "illegals" and "The Sexuals" in the city of San Francisco and was given the X-files-eqe line of "Trust no-one". I was also urged several times to look up people who went to the same church as I did. I decided that engaging in a theological discussion after a 4 hour flight didn't really make any sense and so in response simply  nodded. They seemed convinced that I was a good, honest, church-going, Sunday-school-type individual. It was a pity because in general, they seemed very nice. They even helped me with bags.  Anyhow, I think in a subtle way someone-somewhere was welcoming me to San Francisco.

Mission Statement [Feb. 20th, 2007|10:48 pm]
[Tags|]
[Current Music |Outkast - Mighty O]

I always thought I was too cool to blog. But my deal with Michael has led me to it. However, before I started blogging I want to outline what this blog is about. Future posts will be filled with exciting adventures (in the absence of which, incredibly boring stories) in my new hometown of San Francisco. On the other hand, this blog will NOT contain any gut-wrenching, mind-numbing insights into my personality. Neither will it contain any profound thoughts about the Middle-east crisis or the economic crisis in Guatemala. Having said that, let the games begin.
